Seal Support Systems
"Ensuring Reliable Seals for Industrial Efficiency"
A seal support system is crucial for maintaining the proper operating environment for mechanical seals in pumps and agitators. By supplying either gas or liquid, these systems help regulate key fluid conditions such as pressure, temperature, and flow, ensuring the mechanical seal functions optimally over time. This not only prevents leakage but also reduces friction and heat, thus extending the life of the seals.
Purpose
The primary function of a seal support system is to provide a fluid to the mechanical seal to ensure optimal performance. This fluid supports the seal by cooling, lubricating, and controlling the pressure, ultimately preventing equipment failure and increasing reliability.
Components
Seal support systems typically include a variety of components like reservoirs, heat exchangers, filters, and pumps, all working together to maintain the ideal fluid conditions. Instruments monitor parameters like temperature and pressure to ensure that the system performs consistently.
Types of Seal Support Systems
Various seal support systems are used depending on the application. Common types include:
- Plan 11: Flushes the seal with process fluid.
- Plan 23: Cools the seal flush fluid using a heat exchanger.
- Plan 52: Utilizes a buffer fluid to pressurize the seal.
- Plan 53A/B/C: Employs a barrier fluid with different pressurization configurations.
Applications
Seal support systems are widely used in industries like oil and gas, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage, where equipment integrity is crucial.
T S Pot is used to circulate barrier fluid in the seal chamber. This can be done at atmospheric pressure or can be pressurized by the hand pump attached to the T S Pot. Selection of barrier fluid depends upon the process, any fluid having lubricating properties can be selected which should be compatible with the process media.
Advantages of using T S Pot:
- Lubricates the seal faces
- Disperse the heat generated in the seal chamber by syphoning effect
- Maintain pressure in the seal chamber to counter the equipment pressure
Cyclone separators are devices used in industrial processes to remove solid particles from fluids or gases using centrifugal force. They operate by causing a rotational motion, which separates substances of different densities, allowing particles to be collected and removed from the flow.
Pressurized external barrier fluid circulation from a central stand-alone pumping unit pack which ensures higher flow rate, better heat dissipation and positive circulation of barrier fluid. This increases higher cooling rate with inbuilt heat exchanger.
Used for high pressure and high heat generating application, also where the process media is unsuitable as a lubricant for inboard seal faces.
Externally pressurized barrier gas supplied through a gas control system to a dual seal arrangement. An inert gas is used as a barrier gas. This system eliminated media leakage to the atmosphere. Best suited in areas where media leakage to atmosphere in not allowed.
Mainly used for dual pressurized non-contacting gas seals.
A well-designed seal support system can reduce seal failure rates, minimize equipment downtime, and lower overall maintenance costs, ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
